Why did Clay need an incident management tool?

Initially, we didn’t really have any structure in place. We were doing everything manually – creating incidents in Slack, conducting retrospectives, and pulling in the right people. We also weren’t capturing any metrics like MTTR or incidents per month.

Rootly provided that foundation for us. Right out of the box, we were able to establish an incident management process. We went from having almost no process to one that works for us. As we introduce this to the firm and continue to mature, it’s great that we can tweak things and add workflows within Rootly to keep improving our process.

What were you looking for in the incident management tool?

We went through a compatibility matrix that included PagerDuty, xMatters, and Grafana. What really stood out to me was how Rootly’s customer service was highly praised. People mentioned that if you needed something customized for your company or incident management process, a dedicated solutions engineer could make it happen. That really drew me in. After that, I checked G2 reviews, and to be honest, Rootly was ranked number one.

Why Rootly?

We picked Rootly because it integrates with our full incident management stack: Slack for collaboration, Datadog for monitoring, Confluence for retrospectives. It is really impressive that in this era where there are so many different applications that you can get fatigue, Rootly is the interface that centralises everything. It just makes everything easy and automates it. We could use Rootly with our current tools without having to complicate things further.

Rootly is improving our retrospectives

Incident commander can easily tag a squad to the incident when it breaks, and when it's time to perform a retrospective, everything is right there in the format that we want, it is so much easier. You don't have to go back through the Slack channel and get all this information.

Rootly automatically creates the retrospective for us. With the Rootly AI, where it can just summarise everything that happened, all the messages that happened in the incident, and just makes everything very easy. So I think that's the biggest thing for us, is Slack and Confluence.
